Leaving School Early: When it is necessary for children to leave school before the regular dismissal time, parents should give advance notice to both the teachers and the School Secretary. All students much check out with the School Secretary when leaving school early, and check in upon their return.
Absence Due to Illness: If a child is absent due to illness, the parents should inform the Office by 8:30 a.m. the same day. Lower School students' parents should call the teacher for homework assignments; Upper School students should call a classmate.
Notice of Excuse from Physical Education: Any child who is to be excused for reasons of health from physical education or other normally-required activities must bring written notice of such excuse to the School Secretary.
Parent Absence: When parents are out of town, it is very important that the teacher and the School Secretary know who is at home in charge of the children and the names and telephone numbers of relatives who live nearby. Written notice containing this information should be delivered to the School Secretary before the parents leave.
Irregular Absences: There is no substitute for being in class. Crane's yearly schedule offers a generous amount of time for students to participate in family vacations and outside interests. While the faculty and administration acknowledge and support the special talents of many of our students, repetitive absences for activities unrelated to school have a negative impact on a child's performance both socially and academically. The benefits of being at a school like Crane are best derived through steady practice and daily application. Children removed from school for family trips and special events find it difficult to compensate for the lost instruction time and for the disruption in the daily routine.
In the event that parents choose to have their child miss school, they must provide written notification to the division head at least one week in advance. In the Lower School, the parent is responsible for gathering assignments from the classroom teacher prior to the absence. In the Upper School, the student is responsible for contacting each teacher regarding assignments and other responsibilities to be completed during his or her absence prior to their departure.
After a total of ten absences, significant amounts of material will have been missed, and the school may deny credit for the year.
