In the first grade children have many opportunities for social interaction, creative play, exploration, and both independent and cooperative learning experiences. Skills such as reading, writing, and number work are increasingly applied during class activities, projects, and studies. Self-direction and independence are fostered and encouraged in the classroom. Children are asked to make choices about their learning, to monitor and examine their own behavior during the learning process, and to take responsibility for the choices they have made. Learning to get along with and respect others, handle conflicts responsibly, and build friendships and trust are ongoing skills taught in the first grade.
