School Calendar: The school calendar is published and distributed in September of each year. Crane provides each student with one Crane wall calendar. After the calendar is published, we cannot make changes; any changes after publication will be communicated in the school's weekly newsletter. When determining Crane vacation schedules, we must accommodate the Christian League Athletic Conference tournaments and other athletic schedules. We appreciate your patience in understanding the challenges of developing our yearly calendar.
Punctuality: The school urges all parents to help their children arrive early enough each morning to be in their classrooms by 8:10 a.m. Being punctual allows each child the opportunity to socialize with peers and to transition smoothly into the day's activities. Tardiness can be disruptive to both the child's performance and relationships with the class.
Children who are late must check in with the School Secretary in the Office before going to class. Since the responsibility of getting to school on time falls mostly on the parents, we ask that you plan accordingly. The parents of students with repetitive tardiness will be required to meet with the division head. Students with continued tardiness may receive Friday after-school detention.
Please be sure to notify the Office by phone before 8:30 a.m. if your child will be absent from school by calling the School Secretary (Jackie Terry) at x101.
Parking : Please note that this year there are some significant changes to the parking procedure. Students in the Lower School should be dropped off and picked up in the Lower School circular drive; students in the Upper School should be dropped off and picked up in the Upper School lot.
In an effort to eliminate traffic back-up on San Leandro Lane after school, parents picking up children in the Lower School should enter and exit from the west via Hixon Road; parents picking up students in the Upper School should enter and exit from the east via Sheffield Drive. Families with students in both schools, or families that carpool with children in both schools, should have the older students join the younger children to be picked up in the Lower School circular drive.
The speed limit on San Leandro Lane is 35 miles per hour, but 25 miles per hour when children are present. It is crucial that all drivers proceed cautiously and exercise extreme care when driving in the neighborhood around Crane.
Lunch: Children bring their own lunches and (in fair weather) eat outdoors. A healthy snack for recess time may be included in each child's lunch. This practice is encouraged for all students, Pre-First through Eighth, as students often need some additional energy in the middle of the morning. Candy, gum and caffeinated soft drinks are not permitted. We encourage students to bring reusable or recyclable containers to minimize waste. Late lunches, with names written on them, should be brought to the Office by 11:30 a.m. (not taken to the student) and placed in the container marked "Late Lunches." Lunches will not be delivered to the students, but students are aware that they can check in the Office at lunch time (not during class time) to pick up their late lunch. In consideration of their classmates, students are strongly discouraged from having "fast food" meals delivered to them at school. Students will not be permitted to wait for lunch delivery at the drop-off and parking areas.
Hot Lunch: Monday and Friday are "Hot Lunch Day". Hot Lunch is provided to all students at a nominal cost, which is paid along with tuition. The menu is posted in the school's weekly newsletter, so that students may bring their own lunch if they prefer.
Staying After School: Upper School students should not stay at school after 3:25 p.m. unless they are participating in a planned school activity. Lower School students will be checked into daycare if not picked up by 3:25 p.m.
Daycare: Daycare is provided for Pre-First through Fifth Grade students by the Daycare Director (Ellen Bonning). Hours are from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. Drop-ins are welcome, and times are arranged with the Daycare Director or the School Secretary. All Lower School students not picked up by 3:25 p.m. are sent directly to daycare. Fees are $6.00 an hour, and billing is monthly. After 3:00 p.m. the Daycare Director can be reached by pager at 445-1816.
Lost and Found: Lost and Found items are collected regularly and placed in the Lost and Found shed, which is located between the Office and the Computer Lab. Please check the Lost and Found shed on a regular basis. On the last Friday of each month, items remaining in the shed are donated to a local charity.
Phone Messages for Students: Important messages for students will be taken by the School Secretary. Messages will be delivered to students at lunch and after school. Books, lunches, or homework should be marked and brought to the Office for pick-up by students.
Faculty Mail: All items for teachers should be given to the School Secretary to deliver to the faculty mailboxes.
Dog-Free Campus: Allowing dogs on campus creates serious liability and health issues. Crane has declared the campus "dog-free." If you have your dog with you at Crane, please have the dog remain in the car.
