Commitment to Service

At Crane School, we believe that each one of us has the power to make a positive impact in the lives of others. In the Upper School Service Learning Program, seventh and eighth-grade students spend time off campus working on student-generated service projects.

Annual Service Learning Recap:

  • Continuing a decade-long partnership, we returned to Unity Shoppe to help sort food and stock the grocery store with donated goods.

  • We planned and prepared lunches for residents of Transition House, including calculating how much food would be needed, visiting the store to determine our budget, shopping for the food, and then making two meals for 70 people.

  • In collaboration with Explore Ecology, we diverted waste from landfills at the Art From Scrap Creative Reuse Store by receiving industrial byproducts and donations, sorting them into categories, and arranging them for resale.

  • We helped the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County prepare for their semi-annual Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive by labeling and bundling hundreds of paper collection bags.

  • In honor of Crane’s 90th anniversary, students and parents worked together to pack 900 dental hygiene kits for Direct Relief.

  • Students organized a Halloween candy drive, during which over 150 pounds of candy were collected for Operation Gratitude, which creates care packages for U.S. Military personnel stationed abroad.

  • To spread cheer to our elderly neighbors, we brought our voices and instruments to perform holiday songs at Friendship Center.

  • At Creekspirit Foundation, we enjoyed demolishing an old storage shed and all pitched in to prepare the Mosaic Garden for a new season of wildlife education events.

  • After meeting with UCSB researchers and touring the North Campus Open Space, we installed many species of native plants as part of their ongoing wetland restoration project at NCOS.

  • As a public service to our friends at our own Crane School, we sorted through a mountain of lost clothing and hand-delivered labeled items to their owners.

  • We visited West Beach in Santa Barbara to pick up trash and record our findings, then compiled the data and submitted it to Ocean Conservancy to support their advocacy work.
