Adventure Lab @ Crane! Skip the ordinary and enroll your child in an adventure that offers true growth and endless smiles. We’re combining the dedicated, passionate educators of Crane School with the sun-soaked fun of a classic Santa Barbara summer camp. With exciting programs for ages 4 to 14, there truly is something for everyone! Our small-group instruction creates a cozy, supportive atmosphere where every week is a deep dive into your students’ passions—whether your camper is rolling up their sleeves in our Design and Engineering Center, hitting the high notes up on stage, diving into their next creative story, or hiking the local trails.

Get ready to dive into the mystery of how the world works! Four and five-year-olds are the world’s most natural scientists and this is where curiosity meets chemistry and big questions lead to magical discoveries.

Led by experienced educators, we will bridge the gap between play and preschool physics and turn complex concepts into hands-on adventures, using our state-of-the-art facilities as a giant, joyful playground. From fizzy reactions to the wonders of our oak-studded campus, we are on a mission to test, tinker, and transform the ordinary into the extraordinary.

In our intimate, 6:1 student-to-teacher setting, your budding scientist will:

Hypothesize & Wonder: Conduct "mind-blowing" experiments—from bubbling rainbow potions to gentle kinetic builds—that make the laws of nature feel like magic.
Observe & Touch: Use real-world tools designed for small hands to investigate the textures, colors, and reactions of the physical world.

Step into a world of color, texture, and wonder! Designed specifically for our youngest artists, this program transforms the beautiful Crane School campus into a vibrant studio without walls. Here, big imaginations are met with high-quality materials and expert guidance.

Led by Crane’s experienced educators and professional artists, your child will enjoy an elevated summer experience defined by a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring every "little creator" receives the attention they deserve.

Step off the beaten path and into a world of wonder with Coyotes Outside. Specifically designed for the curious spirit of 4 and 5-year-olds, this program uses the breathtaking Crane campus as a natural classroom.

Led by experienced naturalists and educators, our "pack" maintains a 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, ensuring that every child is safely guided as they build confidence in the great outdoors.

The Adventure Awaits

The Young Gardener’s Path: From planting seeds to "watering the rainbows," children will get their hands in the earth. We’ll explore the Crane gardens to learn how plants grow, taste fresh herbs, and discover the tiny pollinators that make it all possible.
Nature’s Craft Studio: We use the "treasures" we find—smooth stones, fallen leaves, and sun-dried twigs—to create magnificent works of art. These hands-on projects bridge the gap between the natural world and the creative mind.
Classic Outdoor Games: Whether it’s a spirited game of "Coyote Tag" on the grass or collaborative team-building challenges, we emphasize movement, coordination, and the "joy in the pursuit" of a shared goal.
Trailside Discovery: On our gentle excursions to Santa Barbara’s open spaces, we’ll splash in creeks and look for wildlife, always returning to our campus home base for reflection and rest.

Junior Makers & Master Builders

Does your child love to ask "how does this work?" or spend hours building towers just to see how high they can go? Junior Makers & Master Builders is an elevated introduction to the world of engineering, reimagined for our youngest innovators.

Set within Crane’s premier facilities, this program turns the classroom into a laboratory of "Rigor and Joy." With our 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, your child will be guided by expert educators who know how to turn a simple curiosity into a foundational lesson in problem-solving.

What Our Little Engineers Will Do:

Imagine & Tinker: Using a variety of high-quality materials—from natural wood blocks to recycled "loose parts"—children will explore the basics of structural design through hands-on play.

Set on our expansive Crane School campus, this program offers both physical play and creative expression, ensuring that every child finds their rhythm and their spark.

With our 6:1 student-to-teacher ratio, your child will be guided by both professional educators and talented artists who understand how to channel energy into meaningful growth.

The Best of Both Worlds:

The Fundamentals of Play: Instead of high-pressure drills, we focus on the "Building Blocks of Sport." Through playful games, our little athletes develop essential balance, coordination, and teamwork. From navigating "obstacle islands" to kicking a soccer ball through "hidden gates," we make sports and activities fun.
The Creative Workshop: Between active sessions, children retreat to the shade to cool down and create. Our studio time focuses on sensory art—sculpting with clay, vibrant sun-prints, and collaborative murals—allowing the mind to focus and the imagination to soar.

Launch into Learning at Adventure Lab @ Crane

Is your little one ready for the big leap into school? Give them a joyful head start with integrated developmental play and skill-building at Adventure Lab @ Crane.

Rather than a "summer review," our program focuses on building skills and confidence in learning. Your child will work with a dedicated Learning Specialist for 50 minutes daily in an intimate, small-group setting (3–4 peers). This high-level instruction is seamlessly woven into the camp day, ensuring they gain essential skills during the day at camp.

What We Offer for Our Youngest Learners:

Small-Group Discovery: Personalized attention tailored to your child’s developmental stage, focusing on the specific "lightbulb moments" they are ready for.
Stress-Free Scheduling: No extra tutoring appointments or weekend workbooks! The growth happens naturally during the camp day, so your afternoons remain free for family time.

Prep for Success: Integrated Academic Support at Adventure Lab @ Crane

Are you worried about the "summer slide?" Give your child the edge they need for next fall with embedded academic support right here at Adventure Lab @ Crane.

Your child will work with a dedicated Learning Specialist for 50 minutes daily in a focused, small-group environment of just a few students. This valuable, high-level tutoring is skillfully embedded into the regular camp day, and our staff diligently schedules the session to minimize interference with exciting camp activities. We make sure they get the support they need while still maximizing their summer experience.

What We Offer:

Welcome to the tastiest corner of camp! In Culinary Creators, we turn the kitchen into a laboratory of flavor. Campers will dive into the world of food, learning that cooking is the perfect mix of science, art, and—of course—delicious fun.

Led by our talented culinary educators, our young chefs will:

The Empowered Mind Grades 6–8 \| Deep Reading, Precision Writing, and Executive Function Unlock the full potential of the adolescent brain in this immersive three-week workshop designed to bridge the gap between academic rigor and personal growth. Literacy & Leadership transforms the traditional summer school model into a "learning lab," where middle schoolers move beyond basic skills to master the complex art of deep reading and strategic communication. Set against the serene backdrop of the Crane campus, this program is led by expert educators in small groups, ensuring every student receives a personalized roadmap to success. The Experience The Deep Reading Lab: Drawing on Maryanne Wolf’s framework, students move past the "skim" to cultivate a powerful reading brain. From modeled annotation to analytical questioning, we help students build the stamina and empathy required to navigate complex fiction and nonfiction with ease. Precision Writing Studio: We treat writing as a craft, focusing on the mechanics of sentence-level fluency and the architecture of a strong argument. Through peer conferencing and mentor texts, students develop the revision stamina and organizational "grit" needed to turn drafts into sophisticated compositions. Mastering the Self (EF Skills): Central to our curriculum is the integration of SMARTS Executive Functioning. Every day begins with a "Planning Huddle" and ends with metacognitive reflection, teaching students transferable habits in time management, task prioritization, and emotional regulation. The Why: This program is specifically designed to reignite the joy of literacy by removing the pressure of grades and replacing it with the thrill of mastery. By combining Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles with high-level word study and morphology, we provide a supportive yet challenging environment where students discover not just what to learn, but how their own minds work best.
